The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is the brainchild of several Hispanic leaders who, in 1979, saw the growing potential of the Hispanic business community and wished to create a body to protect its interests before both the public and private sectors. The Chamber was officially incorporated less than a year later and, in the past three decades, has become an invaluable resource for networking within the Hispanic community and encouraging a sense of cohesion and cooperation. With 3 million Hispanic-owned businesses in operation around the United States, the USHCC makes them a priority in the current economic agenda through the work of more than 200 local chapters and other Hispanic business organizations. The Chamber is responsible for a number of national programs aimed at developing Hispanic firms and increasing communication and partnerships between Hispanic-owned businesses. In addition, the USHCC provides for international trade with Latin American countries and helps Hispanic entrepreneurs and startup businesses with technical assistance and consulting. Every year, the USHCC hosts an Annual National Convention and Business Expo, which attracts hundreds of business professionals domestically and internationally. The convention provides an invaluable forum for networking with both Hispanic businesses and interested corporations. In addition to important relationship building events, the convention features sessions on business development, chamber training, business trends, and current issues. The Chamber also hosts an Annual Legislative Conference for discussion concerning policy issues that affect both Hispanic Americans and the small business community. This year will mark the Chamber’s first Latina Leadership Summit, titled “Increased Your Net Worth, Latina Procurement Power,” which promises to help Latina business owners and potential entrepreneurs gain access to the tools necessary for success. It is an honor to be involved with this important organization and support its wide array of efforts both locally and nationally.

The Beczak Environmental Education Center was founded over two decades ago to help both children and adults learn about the ecosystem of the Hudson River and explore the incredible sights and experiences that it offers. In coordination with standards set by the New York State Department of Education, Beczak participants receive an important hands-on education that explores all aspects of one of the nation’s American Heritage Rivers, from measuring tides to petting local eels. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the Beczak Center guides its participants through a mathematical, scientific, literary, historic, and artistic examination of the Hudson River, approaching the river’s impact on the United States from all angles. Beczak’s programs are open for everyone, not just children, and have proven an invaluable resource for college students, teaching assistants, educators, and senior centers. Offering both indoor and outdoor programs, the Beczak Environmental Education Center has a great range of opportunities to fulfill the educational needs of interested parties. Indoor programs include the study of seahorses, a virtual trip to the mouth of the Hudson River, a detailed look into the Hudson River food chain, a water clean-up demonstration, the examination of plankton and their role in the river, and the creation and use of an estuary model. The Beczak Center’s outdoor adventures include a tour of the Hudson River marsh area and seining program, wherein participants wade into the water with a 30-foot seine net and then study the wildlife that they pull in. It is a source of pleasure to be able to provide such important experiences and learning opportunities for all those who are interested. The Hudson River is a vital part of New York’s history, as well as its future, and it is imperative that all New York citizens understand its significance.
